This is a blog that I have wanted to make for a long time. Somewhere to share my experiences making money online through writing gigs, blogs, shops, and side hustles that have either fizzled out into nothing or turned into full-fledged businesses that keep food on my table.
So many of us want to make more money, make a change in our life and work, or fulfill our dreams of starting a business, but we have no idea know how to do it. I’ve been there and have somehow come out the other side with a successful online business and a handful of steady passive income streams. My next goal is to share what I have learned over the last 12 years and help you find some clarity on what you want to do and what is actually possible.
There are so many reasons why I have wanted to create A Girl’s Gotta Eat. First, because I know so many people who have the potential to make the changes they seek in their life/career and take the risks they want to take, but have no idea how to do it. Secondly, as an elder millennial married to another elder millennial whose every life decision is impacted by the crushing weight of our student loans, I know the importance of income diversity in volatile political and economic climates. Income diversity is income security. When you have money coming in from more than one place like a full-time job and small side business, a handful of side hustles and freelance clients, or another hodgepodge combination of skills, it is so much less stressful when the rug is pulled out from one and you have something else to fall back on. It also gives you a sense of empowerment over your money and finances when you control more of the variables and have several cash faucets to play with, which more people (especially women people) in this world could use.
Third – I wanted to create this site because like it says, a girl has got to EAT and there are more ways to do that than what society’s idea of the perfect career trajectory looks like. You don’t have to finish a degree you hate to prove to yourself that you belong in the workforce. You don’t have to stay at a mediocre job you dislike for 40 years because that’s what your parents did and it was good enough for them. Thanks to the millions of tools and educational resources available on the internet, we can teach ourselves far more than we could even 20 years ago, and we can make even bigger changes in our lives as a result. You can literally invent your own job, and that’s fucking amazing.
By sharing my successes, failures, favorite tools, questionable advice, tutorials, and whatever else comes to mind, I hope to inspire you to take the next steps toward whatever you want for yourself, whether it’s starting that Etsy shop, launching your graphic design business, or becoming more financially diverse. One thing I have learned is that going from zero to 1 is far more difficult than going from 1 to 2. If my advice here helps some of you take that first leap from zero to 1, then this website will be a success.
In my next post I plan on sharing some of the advice that might come out of my mouth if you said to me “OK so I know that I want to do something else, but I have no idea what I want to do.”
